Body care for Nairobi's weather

Cool mornings, strong sun, dusty roads: how to adjust your body care.

Nairobi has one of the most pleasant climates around, but it keeps your skin guessing. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, dry spells, dusty roads and rainy days all ask something different from your body care.

Why skin changes with the weather

When the air is dry, skin loses water faster, and you may notice tightness, flaking or rough patches, especially on the elbows, knees, shins and hands. When it is warm and humid, skin can feel more comfortable but you may sweat more, and washing matters more.

Start in the shower

  • Keep the water lukewarm. Very hot showers feel good on a cold morning but can dry the skin.
  • Choose a gentle body wash. Harsh washes can leave skin feeling tight.
  • Keep it short. Five to ten minutes is plenty.
  • Pat dry. Leave skin slightly damp, ready for lotion.

Moisturise within a few minutes

The best time to apply body lotion is right after you wash, when your skin is still a little damp. This helps hold in moisture. Pay extra attention to the dry areas: elbows, knees, heels, hands and shins. In the cool, dry months, you may want to apply again in the evening.

In warmer weather, a lightweight, non-greasy lotion feels comfortable and does not leave you sticky.

Do not forget the sun

Nairobi is high above sea level, so the sun can be strong even when it feels cool or cloudy. Put sunscreen on any skin that is exposed, such as your face, neck, arms and hands, and wear a hat or cover up if you will be out for long.

Dust and city life

After a day out in traffic and dust, a good wash in the evening helps your skin feel fresh and ready for the night. Wash your hands gently and moisturise them, since hands are often the first place to feel dry.

A few easy habits

  • Drink water through the day.
  • Wear breathable fabrics when it is warm.
  • Change out of sweaty clothes soon after exercise.
  • Be gentle with scrubbing. Once or twice a week is enough.

When to see a doctor

If you have rashes, very itchy skin, painful cracks or patches that do not improve, please see a doctor or dermatologist. Body care products are for everyday comfort, not for treating skin conditions.
