Dry skin or oily skin? How to tell which you have

A simple at-home check, plus what each skin type usually likes.

Knowing your skin type makes choosing products much easier. Here is a simple way to check at home, with nothing but your face and a little patience.

The bare-face test

  1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry.
  2. Do not put anything else on your skin.
  3. Wait about an hour, then look in a mirror in good light.

Now see what your skin tells you.

What you might notice

Dry skin: your face feels tight, and you may see flaky patches or dullness. It often feels more comfortable once you moisturise.

Oily skin: you see shine across your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. Pores may look more visible, and makeup or sunscreen can slide around during the day.

Combination skin: shiny in the middle (forehead, nose, chin) but normal or dry on the cheeks. This is very common.

Normal skin: neither tight nor shiny, and generally comfortable.

The blotting paper check

Another quick test is to press a clean tissue or blotting paper to different parts of your face. If it picks up oil from everywhere, your skin leans oily. If it picks up oil only from the forehead and nose, you are probably combination. If it picks up almost nothing, you lean dry or normal.

Your skin can change

Skin type is not fixed forever. Weather, stress, sleep, hormones and the products you use can all shift how your skin behaves. It is common to feel drier in the cool, dry months and oilier when it is warm and humid. Check in with your skin from time to time instead of assuming.

What each type usually likes

  • Dry: a gentle, hydrating cleanser and a moisturiser that feels comfortable. Avoid very hot water and over-washing.
  • Oily: a cleanser made for oily skin and a lightweight moisturiser. Do not skip moisturiser, because skin that is stripped of water can feel even more uncomfortable.
  • Combination: treat different areas differently if you like, or choose gentle, lightweight products that suit the whole face.
  • Normal: keep it simple and steady.

When to ask for help

If your skin is very red, painful, itchy or keeps breaking out in a way that worries you, please see a doctor or dermatologist. Skincare products are for daily care, not for treating skin conditions.
